The Independent Magazine Concept

During my second year of university, we were given a group project to conceptualise and create a mock-up independent magazine. Intended to be a luxury product with minimal advertising, we aimed to follow trends within the independent magazine market.

After a lot of deliberation, my team chose minimalism as the topic for our magazine which we called Min..

I took on the role of art director alongside writing my own article to feature in Min. and was responsible for the design, layouts and branding of the magazine.

The cover of Min. is of course minimalist. Its clean simple layout is an introduction to the inside pages which follow a similar pattern.

The detailed image of a vibrantly green leaf with a thick white border on a grey background create a sense of calm.

The contents and editor's welcome spread utilise the simple structure of the cover but with the text boxes and images breaking out of the central rectangle.

We wanted to have a minimalist inspiration spread inside Min., so I created the spread below. As always, it continues to use the same central rectangle structure with the large image on the left, but gives readers relief by breaking away on the opposite page.

With each of the articles featured in Min. we chose to use a different background colour to add a bit of fun to the design. My article is below. Almost like a scrapbook of different elements, the images and text boxes leap out of the rectangles.

The back cover of Min. is a reflection of the front but with more of the page furniture seen inside.
